Proposed Siege Marshal Responsibilities (Midrealm)
Inspecting Siege Engines
There is a form for inspecting siege engines which you can find here: Siege engine inspection form in jpeg.
In addition to the above form, I think we need a check list for each type of siege engine. I have started one for arbalests. It is at the following link: checklist for arbalests.
The above checklist has been replaced by a far more detailed guide to inspecting arbalests by DocMo: guide_to_inspecting_docmo_arbalests.htm
Becoming a Warranted Siege Marshal
Chapter I, section C of the SCA Siege Engine Rules gives the requirements for becoming a Siege Marshal:
2. All siege marshals shall
a. Be a member of the Society for Creative Anachronism.
b. Be authorized in siege combat, or have gone through a siege marshal training program within their kingdom.
c. Have a basic understanding of all major engine types (Ballista/Arbalest, Catapult/Onager, Trebuchet[both counterweight and manpowered]).
d. Know how to inspect engines and ammunition.
e. Know the current siege engine regulation.
3. In addition to these requirements, siege marshals on the field shall:
a. Have at least 1 to 4 events of experience as a engineer, or have completed an appropriate training program within their kingdom.
b. Know the basics of armored combat marshalling (see Marshal's Handbook) and conduct themselves safely on the field. (Being a warranted armored combat marshal is recommended, but not required.)
The Midrealm has a Martial in Training (MIT) form available at http://www.midrealm.org/marshal/handbook/kemhbindex.html This form applies to all martial activities including siege. It appears to require the MIT to do inspections, authorizations, marshalling combat, and reporting at 4 different events. However, my lady Kriemhilt, who was a regional rapier marshal, assures me that all 4 activities do not need to be done at all 4 events. For instance, reporting was not required at all events. The Chief of Artillery, Midrealm KDEM for siege, may decide (with agreement from the Earl Marshal) to make such exceptions.
So, if you want to become a siege marshal, make sure you fulfill the SCA requirements above. Then contact me, the Chief of Artillery, at roderick@siegetheday.info Ask for a copy of the MIT for or, with permission, you can print it from the website above. Go to 4 events that have siege activities and get as many signatures as you can. Then send the completed MIT form to address given for the Chief of Artillery in the Pale. Keep a photocopy of the completed form.
This procedure is for becoming a siege marshal of the list field. If you want to just inspect siege engines and supervise them on the archery range, we'll need to come up with an abbreviated procedure that doesn't involve armored combat.
